Intranet Programming
An Intranet is an Internal (non-public) Web site that looks and behaves as a web site does, but it has the capacity for so much more. Since an Intranet is available only within a company's network, many business applications can be embedded into the Intranet itself. Why would a company want to do this? Some reasons for an Intranet may be:
- To share/distribute information to different departments within a company in a paperless and cost-effective manner.
- To have a company wide address/rolodex of all employees.
- To publish Human Resource information company wide
- To centralize information and data within the company for ease of administration, security, and recovery
- this could go on and on...
Extranet Programming
An Intranet and Extranet are similar but with a major difference: an Intranet is NOT accessible on a public network (like www.mycompanyintranet.com) but an Extranet usually IS. An Extranet has many of the same characteristics as an Intranet (discussed above) but an Extranet IS accessible by persons outside of your company's network. Why would you want to allow 'outsiders' access to your company info?
- To allow customers to view account information from your company.(example: online banking)
- To allow customers to view past and present invoices from your company for goods and services.
- To allow travelling Salespersons for your company to check agendas and schedules
- this could go on and on...
